January 19, 2010 - Florida Winter Tour Orlando Rotax Report

Tony Kart and Ocala Gran Prix (OGP) pilot Nick Neri scored two very strong results this past weekend at the opening round of Formula Kart Productions Florida Winter Tour (FWT). With the event taking place at the Orlando Kart Center in Orlando, Florida, Neri showed his speed early and often, and was the man to beat from the beginning of Friday morning’s official practice sessions.

After competing in the Rotax Pro category a week prior where Neri claimed a fourth and seventh place results in his first senior event, it was back to the junior categories where he would look to dominate and start the 2010 FWT championship off right. Working with long-time karting tuner Mike Maurini, the duo had their Ocala Gran Prix powered Tony Kart at the top of the time sheets in Friday afternoon’s official timed sessions.

Saturday would provide a great day of racing action as Neri was on his game. Taking the pole position in the morning qualifying session, the talented Floridian driver won the heat race by more than five seconds to score fifty bonus points. Taking the win and starting on the pole for the main event was key as the opening complex of corners provided some fierce wheel-to-wheel action and incidents were of the norm.

As the green flag flew for the start of the main event, Neri got a great jump and exited the first corner on the point. Contact in turn two sent Neri wide and spiraling down the running order as he would close the opening lap in twelfth. Upset with the second corner incident, Neri looked like a possessed driver with a mission as he began clicking off some of the fastest laps of the event. Pacing more than four tenths of a lap quicker than the leader, the OGP driver began to move forward in the 20 lap race. Closing the gap on his fellow competitors quickly, Neri made quick work as he moved all the way back to the second position and hunted the leader until the checkered flag flew. Coming up just short of the win, Neri would claim the fastest race lap and would be the class of a world class field.

Disappointed with Saturday’s second place finish, victory was the only thing that was on Neri’s mind as he qualified in the second position on Sunday. Another great start and mid-race pass gave Neri the point yet again that he would not relinquish for the remainder of the day. Neri took the prefinal win and went on to score a dominating main event win all while gaining maximum points on the day. Neri also scored the fastest race lap on his way to a three second victory over a field of fifty eight drivers.

“I need to thank Ocala Gran Prix, Tony Kart, my tuner Mike Maurini, Jorge Arellano, Kyle Kraus and Martijn Koene from Koene Racing for all of their help and support this weekend,” explained Neri after the event. “Without the combination of all of these people, it would be hard to do what we did this weekend. I am excited about the next round at Palm Beach International Raceway where I will look to continue the momentum from this event.”

Next on the docket for Nick Neri will be the second rounds of the Florida Winter Tour. Competing in Rotax Pro on the first weekend, Neri will shift his focus on weekend two as he looks to make it back to the Rotax World Finals by claiming the championship in Rotax Junior.

Nick Neri would like to thank his all of his 2010 supporters: Ocala Gran Prix, Tony Kart Florida, Josh Power, High Rev Engineering, Alpinestars, SKF Bearings, Grand Products, Bridgestone, Koene Racing and Race Tech Development.
