December 18, 2011 - Ocala Gran Prix Pilot Nick Neri - 2011 Season Review

Ocala Gran Prix (OGP) sponsored driver Nick Neri closed out the 2011 race season and looks onward to 2012. Scoring a national championship and a dominant victory in the biggest race of the year, Neri proved to be fast in both karts and cars, standing on the top step of the podium in both disciplines.

Neri's biggest win of the year came just over a month ago at the prestigious SuperKarts! USA (SKUSA) SuperNationals. Competing in the S2 category under the Koene USA tent and working with fellow SuperNats champion Alex Speed, Neri dominated each and every on track session. After topping the time charts throughout the practice sessions, Neri went on to claim the pole position, three heat race wins and main event victory including the fastest lap of the race in his first real gearbox event.

On Sunday morning in Las Vegas, Neri was able to take part in the SuperKarts! USA opening ceremonies and tribute to Dan Wheldon. In three wide, 33-kart salute, Neri was selected by Mike Maurini, both whom had been working with Wheldon throughout 2011, to drive the kart that was prepared for the Indy 500 champion alongside IndyCar Series drivers EJ Viso and Martin Plowman. As the trio led the field around the track, Dan Wheldon was given his last SKUSA checkered flag in a championship style tribute.

Earlier in the year, Neri claimed another dramatic victory at the United States Rotax Grand Nationals at the Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah. After progressing nicely through the heat races, the Floridian pilot would be sent off course in the prefinal falling back outside the top-twenty. A spirited drive forward saw the multi-time champion line up just inside the top ten for the main event in which he drove to the front. Leading the majority of the race laps and holding off the advances of fellow competitors, Neri went on to claim the Rotax Senior National title adding to his Rotax Junior and Rotax Mini Max National championships garnered in past seasons.

With the victory, Neri was invited to join Team USA at the Rotax Grand Finals in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates but chose to decline the invite to race stateside in Las Vegas.

"2011 has been an incredible year for me," expressed Neri. "To win the SuperNats and Rotax Grand Nationals in the same year as well as have the opportunity to compete in some car racing thanks to Ocala Gran Prix's Jorge Arellano, is truly awesome. I would really like to thank everyone who have helped me get to where I am today."

Competing at the annual Florida Winter Tour in the early months of 2011, Neri was a threat for victory in each and every on track session. After claiming three top-five results in the opening four rounds, Neri would lead the pack at the third and final weekend of competition. Taking place at the Ocala Gran Prix facility, Neri went on to take top honors in Sunday's stacked Rotax Senior field as he drove away from the competition to take the checkers.

Neri continued, "The only disappointment in 2011 were my results at the Florida Winter Tour. Competing in the Senior ranks for the first time, I realized I needed to be better prepared. As the series went on, I was able to get more confident and knew that future race wins were just around the corner."

Showing his winning ways in the karting ranks, Neri was invited to the annual Skip Barber Scholarship Shootout. Taking place at the famed Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, the 15-year-old was tied for second in the overall competition and was awarded $28,000 of Skip Barber money. Utilizing that money to compete in the Skip Barber Winter Series, Neri has already competed in the first event weekend scoring a pair of top five results including a victory in his first ever event. Currently leading the point standings, Neri will compete at famed racetracks such as Sebring International Raceway, Homestead-Miami Speedway, Road Atlanta and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Nick would like to thank his sponsors and supporters for a fantastic 2011 season. A big thanks to Ocala Gran Prix and Jorge Arellano, Skip Barber, SwedeTech Racing, Martijn Koene and Mike Maurini of Koene Racing and Koene USA, Highway Systems Management, Tom Mucha Builders, Playseat, FreeM, Razor Image, Grand Products, Orlando Kart Center, Love Honda, Sun Dog Inc., Heffner Performance, GO Designs and Autosports Media as well as tuner Alex Speed.
